Resources for Teaching
While all doctoral candidates do fieldwork, it typically occurs during the final dissertation phase after coursework and exams. In BLC, most coursework is done through fieldwork. This approach is adapted from a teaching strategy called Problem-based-learning (PBL). Problem-Based-Learning pedagogy has demonstrated relevance in architectural education especially in the teaching of social and cultural issues within the built environment, especially in the teaching of social and cultural issues within the built environment (see Sen, "Learning from the Ordinary"). While much of Problem-Based-Learning has been applied to undergraduate and beginning education, we find tremendous potential for transforming PBL’s experiential curriculum for graduate and doctoral education.
This section details the classroom pedagogy, field course choices, Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) framing the classroom activities in Buildings-Landscapes-Cultures.
